Since it’s been so warm lately, (and since we’ve been terrible about blogging), we’re going back through some of our fall portraits and weddings and sharing them here on the blog. Ryan & Corinna took us on a nice long hike between their wedding ceremony and their reception. We knew this was a possibility so we brought a change of shoes. And of course, they did too…along with backpacks filled with water and their beautiful dog. The couple were married at an outdoor amphitheater at Devil’s Den State Park. After their nice long hike, they enjoyed the company of friends and family, good food, home brewed beer and wine, and in lieu of a wedding cake, homemade pies. Here are some of our favorite images from their celebration/outdoor adventure. You’ll notice that some images have LOTS of white space between them, some images have just the right amount and some have none. We have WordPress to thank for that. WordPress is a free blogging software and at the moment, it powers our blog….but not for long. Enjoy!

Not Holding Back

Not Holding Back – In many ways, it’s something we all aspire NOT to do…hold back. We all want to give ourselves wholeheartedly to something. And for music artist Neil Greenhaw, the title is especially fitting. Neil is in the midst of some big changes in his life. He recently opened Haxton Road Studios, a professional recording studio here in Northwest Arkansas. Since opening, he’s been pretty busy. And in the midst of all of that, he left his job of 4 years to help start Grace Hills Church. Life experiences involving change often cause us to respond by “proceeding with caution and sometimes, resistance” or they challenge us to “take a plunge”. For Neil, this new single is about taking a plunge. As always, we are excited to collaborate with music artists like Neil because it gives us a chance to come alongside someone and to be a part of their journey. A couple weeks ago, we were hired to photograph the Northwest Arkansas Council’s Winter meeting. The Northwest Arkansas Council is a private sector-led community development organization dedicated to improving the social and economic well being of Northwest Arkansas. The Council is made up of prominent community and business leaders. The meeting was held at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Besides being a world-class art museum, Crystal Bridges is also an architectural wonderland and a great backdrop for creating images. Needless to say, we were excited to be shooting there. Of course, we didn’t realize (until she walked into the room), that Alice Walton, would be there…and that she’d be receiving a lifetime membership to the Northwest Arkansas Council. As it turns out, she’s very personable and we were able to meet her and thank her for the museum. (Yes, she paid for the whole thing). Here are some images from the meeting. Enjoy.

Making art out of an art museum

One of our new year’s resolutions is MORE PERSONAL PROJECTS. Why personal projects? Because they’re fun, they stimulate creativity and they give you that much needed time to explore the ever-changing world of photography on your own terms. All too quickly, the world of photography can become overshadowed by the little things in life; Gear (or lack thereof), running a business, keeping up with or ahead of competition, managing your own personal life. That’s why we’re giving ourselves MORE PERSONAL PROJECTS. (all caps for emphasis)

This is our first project: Making art out of an art museum. We decided to shoot all the images with an iPhone to keep things simple and to explore the creative capabilities of shooting and editing with the phone itself. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is amazing. And we’ve seen a lot of images of the artwork on display. But one look at the architecture and you’ve got to believe that some of the artists on display there would encourage the visitors to look at the ceiling instead of their own art. And that was our goal…to find the art in the facility itself. I don’t doubt that this will be a multi-visit project.

So I guess this is Round 1.

Last week, our good friend and downtown neighbor Aaron Szabo of Imagine Film Company approached us about a photo shoot for Chloe, a 16 year old boxer. Chloe belonged to Aaron and Whitney and as Aaron told me, her health was quickly deteriorating. Dog owners don’t view their dogs as merely pets, they see and treat them as family. And as everyone reading this probably knows, it really sucks to lose family. At the time of writing this, Chloe has since passed. She passed away peacefully in the arms of Aaron and Whitney and as Aaron said, there really wasn’t a better way for her to pass. We were honored to be able to capture some images of Chloe in her last days here on earth and we sincerely hope that they help Aaron and Whitney remember her 16 well-lived years.
